The purpose of this Web site is to honor the achievements of Pakistani women. We will add to the list of profiles each month by introducing different Pakistani women achievers. They have inspired us with their determination and delighted us with their talents. As Pakistanis and as members of the greater world community striving for peace, we must acknowledge that an educated and successful woman can be a pillar of strength not only for her country but for the rest of the world.
Since independence in 1947 from the oppressive British rule, the people of Pakistan have faced many different types of struggles. Poverty, illiteracy, corrupt politicians and feudal lords have kept millions of women and men from achieving their potentials and acquiring a better economic status for themselves. In this struggling society, women and religious minorities have been constant targets for persecution. This month we are featuring two internationally recognized Pakistani women. Asma Jahangir's name is foremost among Pakistan's human rights activists. Amidst constant threats to her safety, she continues her work to raise awareness of women and minorities' rights. Bapsi Sidhwa is one of Pakistan's best known English fiction writers. In her novels, she has addressed issues such as the horrific communal violence which took place at the time of Pakistani and Indian independence, as well as, the struggles of women in Pakistani society. In our second month of publication now, we deeply appreciate all the encouraging words and suggestions which we have received from our readers. As always, we welcome constructive criticism and, of course, positive feedback. Thank you for visiting Jazbah.org! ***Subscribe to the Jazbah Mailing List © Jazbah.org 2008.
